2007, the Year of Blogs
By Béatrice Perret du Cray, Élodie Morel Lebbos
December 17, 2007

Nowadays, blogs are rapidly spreading on the web. Their number is estimated at one hundred million in 2007. These new communication spaces allow any person to wash their dirty laundry in public, organize a lobbying campaign, take part to the development of online encyclopedia or even shout out loud their feeling of being fed up with the war: new blogs blossomed starting July 2006 under the keyboard of internet surfers who, whether Lebanese or not, were trying to express their points of view, their thoughts or their emotions regarding the conflict between Israel and Lebanon. Blogs seem to represent new individual channels of expression far from any censorship. Here is some information on this new medium.

The word blog is the contraction of “weblog”, “log” meaning journal. The blog is then a “journal on the web” that can represent a diary, a personal site or even a cluster of authors. Frequently updated, the blog displays dated information called tags, notes or articles that can be commented by readers. The typical blogger publishes daily all kinds of information: he tells about his peregrinations on the net, expresses himself on a topic that he is passionate about and comments the daily breaking news while he allows other bloggers to freely react in real time like in a discussion forum, without filtration nor formal moderation (see legal note).
