AFC Cup: Lebanon’s SAFA Squander Jordan Advantage
March 19, 2008

Lebanon’s SAFA club squandered a 3-1 lead away to Jordan giants Al Wehdat and had to be content with a 3-3 draw away in Amman on Tuesday.

Having already defeated East Bengal 1-0 in their opening fixture, SAFA are now leading Group B with four points from the maximun six.

The Indians bounced back from that defeat to down Ahli Sanaa of Yemen 1-0 thanks to a goal from Edmilson.

SAFA were two goals ahead by the half-hour courtesy of Ronnie Azar and Ramzi Diop to the complete shock of 12,000 fans crammed at the stadium.

International striker Mahmoud Shilbaya pulled one goal back for the Jordan hosts five minutes after the restart, a glancing header in the roof of the net from a goalmouth melee.

Al Wehdat went on the rampage later on, missing two clear-cut chances in the opposite goalmouth before being punished in the 83rd minute by the incisive Azar again, who made it 3-1 for the visitors at the end of a brilliant solo run.

The Jordanian team fought back again. Substitute Hassan Abdulfattah reduced the deficit three minutes later and Bassem Fathi levelled the scoreline three minutes into injury time from a close-range effort.

Al Wehdat are due to entertain East Bengal on April 2, with SAFA paying a visit to Sanaa’s Al Ahli.
