Helem launches a campaign against homophobia in Arabic
April 23, 2007, 01h10 - updated

For the International Day against homophobia on May 17th, association Helem Montréal joins Helem Beyrouth and presents, on May 19th, a documentary about the homophobia in the Lebanese and Arabic culture. This event is the occasion for Helem Montréal to present its very first awareness campaign against homophobia in Arabic. Posters against homophobia will be distributed in Montreal districts with strong Lebanese population.

"HELEM" means "Dream" in Arabic. It is also, in this language, the acronym of Lebanese Protection for the cheerful, the lesbians, bisexual, transgender, transvestite, intersexes and queer. Helem exists under this name in the Lebanon since 2000. This association has for priority the abolition of the law 534 of the Lebanese penal code which criminalizes "the sexual relations against nature", used against homosexuals.
