Dubai Cares helps 9,000 needy children in Lebanon go back to school
January 02, 2008, 01h57 - updated

United Nations Refugee and Works Agency (UNRWA), with the help of $1.277 million (about Dh4.686 million) donated by Dubai Cares, managed to put 9,000 children from Lebanon’s Nahr Al Bared camp destroyed in fighting back in temporary schools located in the Beddawi and Nahr Al Bared areas.

Karen Abu Zayd, UNRWA’s Commissioner-General, warmly welcomed the $1.277 million donation from Dubai Cares. Dubai Cares was launched with spectacular success last year by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, with the initial aim of raising money to help educate one million children in poor countries.

With Dubai Cares’ contribution, UNRWA has rented, furnished and equipped schools in the Beddawi camp area and the places adjacent to Nahr Al Bared, to allow displaced children to continue their education as normally as possible. Traumatised children will be receiving psychological support, and recreational activities will be organised for them.
