Future MP Mohammad al-Amin Itani stated in an interview with al-Balad newspaper in yesterday's edition that removing political posters from the streets of Beirut is not enough and instead the city should be free of weapons.
Itani added that completing reconciliation did not mean that wounds disappeared, however they represented an attempt to heal them through meetings. Itani stated also that common street committees were the type of social process needed in mixed regions however they would not replace legitimate authorities. "We do not want Beirut only free of posters, but of weapons as well," he said.
Itani said that it was not easy for the Future Movement to remove pictures of assassinated former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri from the streets of Beirut however he said these pictures were "imprinted in hearts and minds." Itani added that he expected positive results from Speaker Nabih Berri's statement, which said that posters would be removed from all Lebanese regions through dialogue.
