Joumblatt tweeting about Beirut heritage demolition: it's not Security Forces' fault

BEIRUT | iloubnan.info / NNA - February 08, 2016, 08h58

In a number of tweets on Saturday, Walid Jumblatt warned that "Demolition of heritage and what remains is in full swing...Yesterday a building disappeared from Beirut's heritage at the intersection of Mar Elias Street and Abdul-Kader Jazairi, under the Internal Security's protection."

Democratic Gathering's leader regretted the absence of "ancient buildings with trees that will never be recovered," adding that "desertification is here now, to be later followed by similar tasteless skyscrapers."

He concluded by saying, "It is our memory that we are erasing...yet to whom shall we complain: to the Ministry of Culture or the Municipality of Beirut or Civil Organization, a big joke!"

On Sunday, he clarified his position regarding the role of the Security Forces. He tweeted :

"For the sake of accuracy, I have received from the Security Forces Director a copy of the demolition license signed by Governor of Beirut...the security forces are not responsible for the crime, which falls within efforts to strip Beirut of its memory and heritage, undertaken by various listed companies with Beirut Municipality and Province."
