Davutoglu: Russia is trying to make ethnic cleansing in Latakia region

BEIRUT | iloubnan.info, with agencies - December 10, 2015, 08h25

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu on Wednesday accused Russia of pursuing a campaign of "ethnic cleansing" in Syria and strengthening Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militants, in a new escalation of tensions between Ankara and Moscow after the downing of a Russian warplane by Turkey. On November 24, Turkish F-16 fighter jets shot down a Russian jet near the Syrian border after repeatedly warning it over air space violations.

According to AFP agency, Davutoglu said he was nonetheless ready to work with Moscow to prevent a repeat of the Nov 24 incident.

"Russia is trying to make ethnic cleansing in the northern Latakia (region) to force (out) all Turkmen and Sunni populations who do not have good relations with the (Syrian) regime," Davutoglu told foreign reporters in Istanbul.
