Turkish fighter jets shot down a Russian warplane near Syrian border

Turkish F-16 fighter jets on Tuesday morning shot down a Russian-made jet near the Syrian border after repeatedly warning it over air space violations, Turkish officials said. However, Moscow stated that the jet had not left Syrian air space.

Russian military helicopters were searching for the pilots of the jet, Turkey's Dogan news agency reported.

Television footage released by Turkey's state-run Anatolu news agency appeared to show two pilots parachuting out of the jet.

One of the pilots of the warplane was in the hands of Turkmen forces in Syria who were searching for the other pilot, broadcaster CNN Turk reported, while quoting local sources.

The jet exploded in the air and the fireball fell on a Turkmen mountain on the Syrian side of the border, CNN-Turk and NTV televisions reported.
