The result of his efforts was published in January 2007 in the prestigious Nature Médécine magazine. At the end of December, Michel Obeid made a promising discovery for cancer research. Under the supervision of Guido Kroemer (specialist in cellular death), this researcher has been working for three months at Institut Gustave Roussy (IGR) on his doctoral thesis on a vaccination against cancer. He arrived in France in 2001: in the same year, he was confronted to the impossibility of joining the medicine faculty in the Lebanese University, thus he headed to Toulouse to pave a new way in his academic experience. He then opted for a thesis on vaccination against cancer in Paris and joined the IGR (first European center fighting against cancer), in the unit directed by Guido Kroemer, specialist in cellular death. The young researcher spent several months testing the reactivity of certain proteins that might play the role of an alarm bell alerting the immune system of the presence of cancer-producing cells in the organism. On 23 December 2005, while he was testing the fourth protein, the Calreticulin – aka «cal», the results showed that the immune system seemed very stimulated: the «cal», a protein present in all the cells, detects the cancer-producing cells and helps the body identify them as intrusive cells. The lymphocytes T, white cells responsible for the immune defense, head towards the intrusive cells in order to destroy them. This is what is called the «immune chemotherapy».
