Antidepressant Consumption: A 30% Increase since July’s War
February 25, 2007

In a report for the AFP, Dr. Elias Sassine, Vice-president of the Association for the protection of children of the war, declares that he noticed, like during any armed conflict “an upsurge of anxious and depressive disorders that is shown through an important increase of medication consumption”. This information was confirmed by Psychologist Hani Abi Ghosn who receives in his pharmacy more and more Lebanese who wish to resort to sedatives and antidepressants. “In many pharmacies, the increase in sales of sedatives and antidepressants reaches around 30%”, he explains while highlighting that in Lebanon many medications, including antidepressants can be bought without prescription. Result: a lot of people take sleeping pills without medical advice. There are various disorders directly resulting from the war: mood swings, anxiety related to being separated from one’s relatives and friends or a post traumatic tress. Other disorders can appear following the identification with the victims which can become even more acute due to the psychological impact of TV pictures on populations. Concerning media, Psychiatric Wadih Naja reminds us that the media war launched among political opponents is also another source of anxiety for the Lebanese.
