The first jewels auction organized by Christie’s in the Near East amounted to USD 11.8 billion on February 1st. This amount was summed up by the selling of 146 pieces of jewelry from a collection gathering 162 rare pieces bearing signatures of famous international jewelers, namely Cartier and Bulgari. Around 300 persons attended this sale organized at the luxury Emirates Towers. The audience gathered nationals from the Emirates, expatriates and people coming from the west and India. The highest auction was for a 16.51 carat diamond solitaire signed Van Clef & Arpels: the piece was sold for USD 1.192 billion, a price highly exceeding its estimation. A second 14.62 carats diamond set up on a ring was sold for USD 732 800 while its estimation was between USD 500 000 and 700 000. All auctions were not highly sold like this pair of diamond earrings signed by Joël Arthur Rosenthal evaluated at USD 700 000 and sold for USD 576 000. Christie’s is the first international auction house to have a subsidiary in the Middle East.
