The League of Independent Activists (IndyACT) is the best environmental, social and cultural means to achieve a healthy, safe and equitable planet. Through this small number of concerned individuals, huge changes were made at numerous levels…But many goals are still waiting to be reached, and IndyACT will always be ready to take the adequate action…What is IndyACT? How does it work exactly?

IndyACT is a league of expert activists working hand in hand to make a positive difference on this planet. It was born after the July 2006 war on Lebanon, when a group of skilled activists from various countries stood up together against the worst environmental tragedy: 10,000 tons of fuel oil were spilled into the sea, due to the Israeli bombing of the Jiyeh power plant in Lebanon!

After this bad crisis, this group realized that a great number of passionate activists needed a structure in which they can work independently to make changes in this world. Therefore, IndyACT was created to serve the interests of people who are willing to take direct or indirect actions in their communities. Through this league, non-violent steps can be followed to make the necessary pressure in order to achieve the required goals.

IndyACT allows activists to operate to their full independence. It cooperates with highly respectable international networks and organizations: IndyACT is a member of the Global Anti-Incinerator Alliance (GAIA); it helps coordinate their work in the Arab World. This organization is also supported by the Beirut Marathon Association (BMA), and the Heinrich Böll Foundation (HBF), which mainly promotes democracy and human rights. IndyACT has also a strong relationship with EcoVillage (the best place for educational ecotourism), and tries to make this world a beautiful place with Xanadu, an art collective dedicated to supporting artists, writers and musicians through different actions.

The main aim of IndyACT is to inspire the next generations to follow their footsteps. It has already led many local, regional, and international campaigns on various levels:

Concerning environment, IndyACT launched an "Arab World Climate Campaign”, in October 2007, in which the Arab League was asked to take urgent action against climate change; Rich oil producing countries were demanded to share responsibility with the developed world to achieve this goal. “Climate change is a global problem, and it can only be solved if the whole world commits to solving it,” said Wael Hmaidan, IndyACT Executive Director, “We cannot isolate ourselves from what is happening to this planet; all our political and economic problems in the region dwarf in comparison to the threat of climate change.”

Moreover, on December 9, 2007, a “climate walkathon” took place in Ein El Mreiseh, Beirut. This event was part of the 3rd ‘International Day of Action against Climate Change’, which was organized on the same day in more than 70 countries around the World, to call for urgent action against climate change. The Arab World participated in this event for the first time this year.

Furthermore, IndyACT focused on marine protection with “save our seas” campaign in 2006, as well as waste management with the “Zero waste campaign”. As for the social level, IndyACT created “IndyWomen”, a feminist movement of change that aims at protecting women rights in our patriarchal society. “IndyYouth” is also an active group of people under 18 who aim at making changes in their societies.

IndyACT believes that it can never achieve its goals without the help of real Activists who should take a quick action, believe in non-violence, have no ego, and most of all, be independent and universal. So if any individual desires to become a “League Member”, IndyACT can provide him with any possible support he might require, in order to reach his targets. But beware: “Passion” and “Professionalism” are two key words in this organization, for “Passion” is the way that leads to perfection, and once it is combined with professionalism, very high results can be achieved and many changes can be made at all levels.
