Jeita Grotto : natural wonder of Lebanon

Jeita Grotto : Visitors on a boat take a ride past huge drapery rock formations on the underground river at Jeita Grotto cave complex, north of the Lebanese capital Beirut on June 13, 2008. The grotto is composed of an upper and lower cave carved out of the Jurassic limestone over millions of years by carbonic acid charged rain water and groundwater, a process which has produced spectacular rock formations. The upper galleries are over two kilometres in length, the lower cave being even bigger houses an underground river; it is recorded as longest cave complex in the Middle East. The Jeita Grotto was a candidate in the competition to select 7 new Natural Wonders of the World, but it did not make it to the “Top 14”.
