Lebanon Rocks! A Small Rock Story Made in Lebanon
By Alia El Kaïssi
October 07, 2008

On September 10, Lebanese band The New Government (TNG for the fans) and the Lebanese action group Lebanese Underground played live on an RFI broadcast. A moment of true bliss according to messages posted on the TNG website. The band just released their new album “Party Animals”.
“The New Government” has been in existence since January 2006 … and it has nothing to do with politics, it is just a pure injection of rock in Beirut.

The New Government came to life 2 years ago and now is making its way in the music scene to top the league bands. In a mixture of west and east the band is shaped of 2 French and 3 Lebanese: Jérémie Regnier (vocals/keyboard), Timothée Regnier (guitar), Zeid Hamdan (guitar/vocals), Nabil Saliba (drums) and Cherif Saad (bass).

Some people still find it hard to believe that there is a rock scene rising and digging its place in the Lebanese music scene but are more surprised when they hear of the New Government's style and performance.

It is mostly due to Zeid Hamdan, a key figure in the Lebanese music scene with underground accents, that their 1st album saw the light. Founder of the young label Mooz Records alongside Khaled Mouzannar, he convinced Mouzannar to let his recording studio be at the disposition of the artists they signed.

The birth of the label also coincided with when New Government started witnessing some success; Scrambled Eggs, their punk alter ego (like Sonic Youth), tried a less experimental rock and we witnessed the rise of rappers like Rayess Bek or RGB. According to Regnier, one of Hamdan's qualities is to listen to others and always assist them in developing their talents. This is how the first New Government album came into being.

New Government is definitely classified as rock with some pop influences, a popish twist exceeding the one of Scrambled Eggs. Comparing these two bands is inevitable because so far in Lebanon, when we wish to talk about the local rock scene New Government would be on top of the list along Scrambled Eggs.
