Desperate, alone and pregnant: why so many turn to abortion

Abortion is illegal in Lebanon and permitted only when the baby poses a threat to the mother's health. But like the use of outlawed narcotics, illegal abortions still take place and are not as uncommon as one might think in such a conservative society.

“Our society does not give us much of a choice - abortion is used as a means of saving women from being literally killed by their families or morally abused by society,” says Farid Mattar, MD.

Although proper statistics do not exist, a recent study shows that 35 percent of all pregnant women in Lebanon undergo an abortion, but this figure includes those performed for health reasons.

“Although we live in a society where religion and culture still condemn premarital sex and other taboo issues, they still take place whether we like it or no,”' says Faysal EI Kak, MD.
