Drafting a solution, or a conflict?
By George Eid

The Doha agreement may have solved many things for some time, but it surely didn’t solve everything for all the time. And one of the issues that remain unsolved is a consensus over the Ministerial statement. If it took a lot to get this exceptional bouquet that the cabinet represents together, what will it take for the Ministerial statement to be put together? And what is to be expected of this statement?

“The Ministerial statement, the passport to Syria: The diplomatic relations with Syria and the sovereignty of the state and the resistance”. That was the headline of the daily Annahar on Wednesday.

The daily reported that there are two essential obstacles before the completion of the Ministerial statement: The weapons of Hezbollah and the relationship with Syria.

Manal Chaaya, Political Journalist at Annahar, explained that “the issue of the weapons is an obstructing point in finalizing the Ministerial statement” .

“The statement should appear in the upcoming few days. However, the real question is how different this statement will be from its predecessors”, she added.

On the other hand, Joyce Akiki, political Journalist at the weekly magazine Al-Afkar said “I don’t expect the Ministerial statement to be any different from the previous ones. However, we can hope that it will mention the issue of the youth and the Diaspora”.

“What is important is not the statement in itself, but whether it will be put into action”, she stressed.

Akiki explained that “the obstruction will come from the stand that is taken against the resistance, which the USA considers a militia.”

“Both parties (March 14 and March 8) are to be held equally responsible for the delay”, she said.

Alternatively, Chaaya stated, “It will really be a disappointment if the statement would turn out to close to the usual statements. The Lebanese people are really fed up with the same statements and words”.

“It (the statement) will surely mention the issue of the detainees in the Syrian prisons and those missing, but it is really unacceptable to mention those two issues without explaining to the Lebanese people the mechanism of solving them”, she added.

“The matter of the missing people is really dependent of the issue of the detainees in the Syrian prisons, and some people may be classified as detainees, while they might be missing or deceased. That is why we need to solve the problem of the Detainees in Syria” Chaaya explained.

In contrast, Akiki said, “We need the Ministerial statement to be a solution, because the Doha agreement was not a solution, it was just a delay of the issues.”

Akiki concluded, “As long as there is a deep conflict, all scenarios are possible. And we hope that this statement will be translated into actions once and if finalized”.

Finally, just like they have waited before, they are still waiting, the Lebanese people have seemingly got used to waiting for a president, a government, a solution, and a change. Yet, the ministers are drafting, we can be sure of that but the question is: Drafting a solution, or a conflict?
