BEIRUT - House Speaker Nabih Berri, called on the Lebanese government and the Foreign Ministry to lead an international diplomatic campaign against Israel to demand compensation for cluster bomb victims. He also appealed to Arab states and friendly countries to contribute to the UNIFIL initiative and provide immediate financial contribution in order to end the task of disarming mines and bombs in southern Lebanon.
The issue of landmines and cluster bombs left by Israel in Lebanon was the topic of a workshop organized by the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights and sponsored by Nabih Berry. Opening the workshop, Berry violently denounced the planting of mines and launch of cluster bombs in civilian areas since 1978, turning the fields into "land of death ".
When the Israeli troops left Lebanon in 2000, they refused to surrender the maps of mines demanded by Lebanon. Berry demanded that this problem be addressed urgently. He also called the Foreign Ministry to launch a broad international campaign to compel Israel to pay compensations to Lebanese victims.
