BEIRUT - The Maronite League, with the support of President Michel Sleiman, has issued an invitation to Maronite Christian Members of Parliament to get together for a reconciliation meeting today. All will be present with the notable exception of opposition leader Michel Aoun.
No explanation was given but according to Change and Reform bloc MP Walid Khoury, the Maronite League did not invite Aoun. Speaking to ANB television, Khoury stressed the important role of President Suleiman and Patriarch Sfeir in forging inter-Christian reconciliation.
MP Boutros Harb also highlights the importance of Bkerke’s involvement. In an interview on Future Television, Harb insisted that reconciliation among Christian parties is only possible with the Maronite Patriarch’s help. He added that Suleiman could play a facilitating role if he coordinated with Patriarch Sfeir.
Sfeir will not be attending the meeting as he left for the Vatican early this morning. He told the press that he hopes the parliamentary elections will be held on schedule.
