Pecha Kucha: Artistic Images of Splendor
iloubnan.info - September 03, 2008, 12h00

A league of Lebanese artists gathered on August 27th in the garden of the art gallery Surface Libre in Jal el Dib, to attend this enchanting evening to discuss and display rising fine arts.

Surface Libre’s art gallery was booming with young artists’ energy in the garden where you would feel their tense love for everything that is inspirationally inventive. Attendees were seated on the grass watching the screen as it slides images and photos of innovation of youth, a manifestation of splendor and vision.

Pecha Kucha, “peh-cha ku-cha” is the Japanese term for the sound of conversation “chit-chat”, translated in Lebanese as “sarsara”.

Pecha Kucha started in Tokyo, Japan in February 2003 by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham. It is spread today in more than 120 cities in the world. Pecha Kucha is a global network of independent creative artists, a platform of exchanges and interdisciplinary meetings.
The idea behind it is to keep presentations concise, the interest level up and to have many presenters sharing their ideas within the course of one night.

Therefore, the 20x20 Pecha Kucha format was created: each presenter is allowed to present a slideshow of 20 images, each one shown for 20 seconds. This results in a total presentation time of 6 minutes 40 seconds on a stage before the next presenter is up. Each event usually has 14 presenters. The presenters on Wednesday August 27 were:

Bashir Khoury - architect
Brigitte Daher - Fashion Designer
Georges Daou - architect
Cynthia Raphael - animator
Rita Nader - Interior design
Guillaume Credoz - architect
Rita Moubarak - Graphic Designer
Maral Der Boghossian - Painter
Rana Haddad - multimedia
Samer Chamoun - architect
Natalie Riachi - Fashion Designer
Jessy Gemayel - designer
Pascal Martel - Industrial designer

Presenters (and much of the audience) are usually from the design, architecture, photography, art, and creative fields, but recently, it has also stretched over to academia and the business world. This system of presentations, between the speed dating, the jam session and the improvisation makes it possible to keep the rhythm and hold the public in breath. In two sets, a dozen creators implied in the world of design, graphics, architecture, fashion, music, multimedia, art… present a work, a piece of furniture, a building, a collection, a film, or an exposure, a simple idea like a portfolio in integrality!
