BEIRUT - In an interview with Ash-Sharq Al-Awsat daily, Hassan al-Chahhal who signed memorandum of understanding (MOU) with a Hezbollah leader on Monday, attributed the decision to freeze the document to the surprisingly strong objection his Salafist predecessors had against the MOU.
Sheikh chahhal reiterated his belief that the aim of the MOU was to prevent Sunni-Shia strife.
Hassan al-Chahhal said that Sheikh Dai al-Islam al-Chahhal, the founder of Salafism in Lebanon, did not object to any items in the MOU despite his categorical rejection of the agreement the day it was issued.
Sheikh Dai al-Islam al-Chahhal, also conceded to dialogue with Hezbollah representatives in northern Lebanon, according to Hassan al-Chahhal.
