Batizado 2008 : Brazilian art in Lebanon
iloubnan.info - October 10, 2008, 14h50

BEIRUT - For the first time in Lebanon, Batizado, a festival of multiple Brazilian art forms will take place starting Thursday 23rd till Tuesday 28th October.

Ten days of Brazilian art forms & festivities open to all public in Lebanon: Samba, Afro-Brazilian dances, Maculelê (stick dance) with mestres (highest ranking instructors in Capoeira) from Brazil! Mestre Amen and Mestre Calango will offer workshops, lessons, lectures, and advancement in the art of Capoeira. Capoeira is an art form developed by African slaves in Brazil during the colonial era. It is a culmination of a fight, a game, and a martial art disguised as a dance and used as a means for liberating the body, mind, and soul.

It is an important initiation ceremony with the graduation of the students by the mestre (capoeira master) and earn their first cordão (cord).

Capoeira Sobreviventes have established regular Capoeira classes in Lebanon for the past two years. Currently there are more than 30 students/members with the group from different backgrounds who are ready to go through a traditional ceremony of playing Capoeira with a master, and obtaining their first cordão officially by the group’s visiting mestre. The batizado will be attended by 2 mestres and some of their top students, who are all residing and teaching in the United States.

There will also be inviting schools from Syria, UAE, Egypt, Greece, Turkey, and other countries in the region to attend to this event.

Deadline for registration is the 16th of October.
