Photomed Liban 2016 to kick off on Wednesday

Beirut is getting ready to host the 3rd edition of Photomed Liban, the Festival of Mediterranean Photography, from January 20 till February 10, 2016, in partnership with Byblos Bank and co-organized by the Lebanese Tourism Office in Paris.

The Festival features international and Lebanese photographers and will be held in different venues in the Lebanese capital: Byblos Bank Headquarters, Beirut Exhibition Center (BEC), Institut français du Liban, Hotel Le Gray, and Station.

The 2016 edition pays a tribute to Spain with the works of Spanish photographers Toni Catany, Alvaro Sanchez-Montanes, and Luis Vioque, and the collection of the famous Spanish actor Gabino Diego. On the other hand, a retrospective is dedicated to French photographer Edouard Boubat, in addition to the works of French photographers Emma Grosbois, and Arno Brignon. Last but not least, Italy is represented by photographers Alessandro Puccinelli and Angelo Antolino.

Philippe Heullant, President of Photomed emphasizes: «We work with photographers in order to promote a positive image and debate in the Mediterranean region. Culture can play a key role in addressing extremism and the intercultural dialogue stimulated through photography can help raise and maintain common values against intolerance».

The objective of Photomed is to promote Mediterranean photography and highlight Lebanese photography.  It is in this spirit that Lebanese galleries are being honored since they have long carried out significant and constant efforts to raise awareness and to promote the art of photography. Hence, the growing interest of the Lebanese public towards photography. For the third edition of Photomed, the following Lebanese galleries are invited to showcase Lebanese photographers: Galerie Tanit with Gilbert Hage and Lamia Maria Abillama, Galerie Janine Rubeiz with Lara Tabet and Myriam Boulos, Galerie Art Factum with Caroline Tabet and Tanya Traboulsi, Galerie Agial with Waddah Faris and Hady Sy, Galerie Alice Mogabgab with Tony Hage.

Karim Sakr (Photomed 2015 prize winner), Randa Mirza, and Elsie Haddad, three talented Lebanese photographers, will also present their works under different themes.

Mrs. Nada Tawil, Head of Group Communication Department at Byblos Bank said: “Byblos Bank is proud to be a partner of the Photomed festival in Lebanon for the third year in a row. We believe that this initiative paves the way for cultural exchanges and allows Lebanese photographers to witness the works of true masters in photography from different parts of the Mediterranean.” She added: “We also aim, through this collaboration, to showcase the works of Lebanese photographers, and to place Lebanese photography under the spotlight. We have worked closely with the organizers of Photomed to achieve this by creating a special Lebanese program in each edition of the festival.”

Video art will be also featured during the Festival under the title «Mediterranean Expressions. From poetry to commitment». the works of Mediterranean artists that are part of the Maison Européenne de Photographie collection, such as Ange Leccia, Béatrice Pediconi, Louidgi Beltrame, and Antoine D’Agata.

During the 3rd edition, portfolio reviews are open to photography lovers. It will take place on Friday, January 22 and Saturday, January 23, 2016, from 10h00 to 12h30 at Byblos Bank Headquarters.

Candidates, who wish to have their portfolios evaluated by a panel of experts and benefit from their advice, should visit the website http://www.photomedliban.com in order to submit the required information and book an appointment.

The panel of experts consists of: Philippe Heullant, President of Photomed, Philippe Sérénon, Director of the photo agency « Vu » and co-founder of Photomed, Guillaume de Sardes, Artistic Director of Photomed, and Fernando Peracho, gallery owner.

The European Union prize will be awarded to the winner of the best portfolio who will be also entitled to the publication of a book and an exhibition at Hotel Le Gray.

In the program of the 3rd edition, photography workshops will be organized around the following topics: “Portrait” with Pierre Anthony Allard, “Architecture of the city” with Serge Najjar, and “Urban Memory”, with Caroline Tabet.

Photomed also launched a competition for Lebanese photographers resident in Lebanon (Deadline for submission of applications: January 15, 2016). The winner of this contest will have the opportunity to exhibit his work at the upcoming Photomed Festival in France, which will take place in May 2016. As for the 2nd prize winner, his work will be exhibited during the 2nd semester of 2016 at the gallery of the Institut français du Liban.
